WEATHER
CONDITIONS
Weather conditions: |
| The spring was late and cold in the inner parts of the Chukchi Peninsula, which caused a delay in plant vegetation of nearly 3 weeks compared to 1997. Vast snow-patches retained in some depressions till mid August, which is very unusual according to reports of local people. July (from 7 to 31) was warmer and drier than average (mean temperature +11.7^C, precipitation - 3 mm). First half of August, to the contrary, was cold, windy, and rainy (+5.6^C, 55 mm).

Breeding conditions:
| Arctic Foxes were met twice, more common were Red Foxes. A brown bear was observed. Local people reported increase of number of bears and wolves, while domesticated reindeers showed decrease in the last years. Snowy Owls and Pomorine Skuas were absent; only once met a pair of Long-tailed Skuas. Two local pairs of Buzzards were not breeding. A pair of Merlins nested in the rocky area. Waders were not met in the hot spring valley where sedge and bushes were dominant habitats; gravel flats along Gilmimlinei River were only populated with Ringed Plover (1 pair/1.5 km). Tussoky tundra of mountain foothills near the Ioni Lake had very low density of waders: 1 Grey Plover and 1 Pectoral Sandpiper were observed on 90 km of surveys. Low bird breeding success was possible in June and due to cold spells and rains in August.

Rodent dynamics:
| Only single records of lemmings were made. Density of voles can be evaluated as average. Arctic Ground-Squirrels were numerous in hot spring valley, but rare in open tundra.
